I didn't think Spotify could be associated to handle local files like mp3s.  Is that actually a feature it can handle?

20180101: I went to a random mp3 in file explorer > right clicked > open with > choose another app > more apps >

look for another app on this PC

found (2) locations of spotify.exe

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\SpotifyAB.SpotifyMusic_zpdnekdrzrea0\spotify.exe
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\spotify.exe

yes file association is an easy part perhaps - but what I was looking for is to make Spotify my default player -

e.g. when I say to Cortana play music (using windows 10 on PC & Surface 3), it always look for Groove - which has been discontinue by Microsoft and moving on with Spotify. technically I should be able to do so.

This was the main reason I have to open up this thread.

Is this something Spotify can handle when it is not installed by the store? If so, we should be able to associate if we find the exact path to the executable file, which is not very difficult.

Mmm. I'm having difficulty associating. I am trying to make Spotify my default player so when I invoke it from my keyboard it opens Spotify and not Groove.

I have the Spotify store app. If I try to associate MP3s to Spotify using the win10 settings app, it takes me to the store but hides the app and shows other music apps that are not Spotify. If I try to associate using the Control Panel, it takes me to win10 settings app.

Both paths to the Spotify exe I mentioned above I found in the appdata folder. Its size was 0 kb, yet when I double-clicked on the exe it opened Spotify.

I am not sure what to do to make my keyboard invoke Spotify when I press Fn+F4. That's all I want to do.

The method to achieve that might vary depending on how that keyboard hotkey on your model was designed.  You may have settings in the hotkey application, if one exists.  Or it may require a registry edit.  Or it could very well be hard-coded, but I doubt that.  I might suspect that if it was only launching "wmplayer.exe", but if it's opening groove, it's likely calling the Groove app using either a protocol or file type association.

You may be able to find out by opening Task Manager and adding columns in the Details tab to view the command line used to spawn the groove process.

Or depending on who made the keyboard, maybe a trip down a search engine could help reveal how to change what app it uses.

Otherwise, failing any of the above:  the Spotify LLC company must make a change to their app that allows it to be selected for handling ".mp3" files.  That's why when you click the "choose another app", it searches for this file association:

Even if we install Spotify as an app, that doesn't appear in the list to make that a default app for windows 10.

Hi Ahsan,

Associating MP3 files to the Spotify store app is not yet available. You will need to import the MP3 files to be able to use them on the app. What you can do is to provide a feedback to the developer of the program to be able to have this feature available like Shawn 'Cmdr' Keene [MVP] said.

sorry all everything you have said just sounds like a run around. I'm confused... I have win 10 surface 3 tablet a both Microsoft products which doesn't seem to matter they don't mesh nicely �� if Microsoft is not using groove music anymore & is using Spotify why hasn't it been all set up for users to make a smooth simple over turn. I was told to download Spotify to replace groove. why weren't these complications worked thru before making groove invalid. I only want to download audio of a service & I can't get Spotify as default & groove is only an error 0x8000705aa it really shouldn't be complicated thx
